LEVEL 3:
MINDFUL RIDING
AS A SPORT
What this Pathway is about
Mindful Riding as a Sport is for riders who still love the challenge of competition — but want to pursue it with greater care, awareness, and integrity.
This Pathway supports riders competing at grassroots level in Dressage, Show Jumping, or Eventing who are questioning conventional approaches and looking for a way to train that prepares the horse for sport, not just to perform.
The focus shifts from producing results to educating the horse — physically, mentally, and emotionally — so the demands of competition are introduced gradually and thoughtfully.
Ambition is welcome here.
So is responsibility.
WHO FOR?
Important: Over 18's only.
This Pathway is suited to riders who:
-
are actively training and competing (or preparing to compete)
-
care deeply about their horse’s experience of training and sport
-
want to align performance goals with welfare-led decision making
-
are willing to reflect on habits, pressures, and expectations
-
value preparation, clarity, and emotional regulation — in both horse and rider
This Pathway isn’t about rejecting sport.
It’s about loving the horse more than the sport.

How learning works at this level

At Level 3, learning becomes more nuanced.
Training focuses not only on what you school, but how and why — especially under increasing pressure.
Support is offered through:
-
in-person sessions focused on feel, timing, and clarity
-
ringcraft focused sessions
-
online sessions used to review training, reflect on decision-making, and refine plans
-
thoughtful discussion around competition choices, preparation, and recovery
Online sessions are used alongside in-person work to develop reflection, problem-solving, and confidence in your own training decisions.
The aim is to support you in becoming a rider who can:
-
assess readiness honestly
-
adapt plans without panic
-
and prioritise the horse’s long-term wellbeing alongside competitive goals

What you’ll develop over time
Learning in this Pathway commonly includes:
-
rider self-awareness under pressure
-
refining position, balance, and habits
-
understanding physical and mental load
-
progressive preparation for competition environments
-
recognising signs of stress, tension, or fatigue
-
ethical decision-making around when to push — and when not to
-
developing confidence in your own judgement, not just external validation
This is about depth, not speed.
Structure and Commitment
Mindful Riding as a Sport is supported through
3 month learning cycles.
-
Entry requires a minimum 3-month commitment
-
Sessions are arranged in a rhythm that supports training and competition schedules
-
Support is offered in person and online, as appropriate
At the end of each cycle, we review progress and decide together how to continue.
Many riders choose to roll forward into further cycles as our coaching relationship evolves.
Others step back at certain points in the season.
Both are welcome.

A note from me:
For many years, competitive sport was my world. I worked with high-level riders and was deeply drawn to the athleticism, discipline, and challenge of training horses for performance.
Over time, though, I began to question what I was seeing — particularly where welfare language didn’t consistently translate into practice.
For a period, I stepped away from teaching competitive riders altogether.
I’m returning now with clearer values, more experience, and a stronger belief that it is possible to pursue sport with integrity — when preparation, awareness, and the horse’s experience are genuinely placed at the centre of the process.
This Pathway is an invitation to explore that space together.
Looking forward to meeting you and your horse!
Wiola

Is this the right Pathway for you?
If you’re committed to competing and committed to doing so thoughtfully, this Pathway may be a good fit.
The best way to explore this is through a Trial Session, where we can talk through your goals, your horse, and whether this Pathway supports you at this stage.
